About the Society

We are a local organisation, with Cricklade High Street at its heart. Our aim is to ensure
that our High Street survives and continues to be the centre of our community– read
about what we do below and give us your support!

Who We Are
Cricklade Development Foundation (CDF) is a Community Benefit Society formed to support the long-term wellbeing of Cricklade. We exist to help local people shape the future of the town, especially its High Street —protecting its distinct character while encouraging opportunities to live, work, and contribute locally.
We are owned and run by our members, and every decision we make is guided by what is best for Cricklade and its community.
Our History
CDF was established in 2018 in response to growing concerns about the future of Cricklade’s High Street. Over recent years, we have seen increasing erosion as High Street businesses are lost to residential property conversions. If this trend continues, it will have a detrimental impact on Cricklade and the community it serves.
Thanks to the wider community, we managed to play our part in helping to re-energise the High Street. Our first major initiative was the purchase and renovation of The Old Police Station, a prominent building in a central location, that had been under utilised by Wiltshire Police for many years.
Thanks to the support of our fabulous members and volunteers, the building now provides:
-
Two residential flats, occupied by people with strong Cricklade connections.
-
Two businesses with local ownership:
The Wild Fig, a deli café and a social space.
This project reflects our commitment to practical, locally driven development that benefits the town as a whole.

What's Next
We’re currently working to complete the garden behind the Old Police Station, with plans to make it a public space for relaxation, small events, and community use.
Looking ahead, our wider aim remains the same: to support projects that strengthen Cricklade’s High Street economy, preserve its identity, and improve quality of life for residents.
Our Approach
We focus on:
-
Local ownership and control – ensuring assets and decisions stay in the hands of the community.
-
Long-term viability – supporting projects that contribute to a resilient and active high street.
-
Inclusive benefit – creating opportunities that serve a broad range of local needs.
